Quality is the watchword for Tilly Bailey & Irvine’s Commercial Law Team, based at the firm’s offices at Wynyard Business Park. Building on consolidations and recruitment to create a first-class team of commercially minded lawyers, the group goes from strength to strength.

“Laws and legal processes change constantly,” says Commercial Law Team lead partner Nigel Broadbent, “and we invest heavily in ensuring that all our lawyers maintain the highest standards of legal knowledge. Our clients expect nothing less than the very best advice, and we work very hard to provide it to them – on time, and on budget.”

Comprising a group which includes six partners, as well as a growing cohort of solicitors, legal executives and paralegals, the team counts among its commercial client base some of the best-known names in business in Teesside and the North of England.

The range of services offered by the team is very broad. The Commercial Property team has wide ranging experience in all types of commercial property transactions, including the sale and purchase of investment property and development property for both commercial and residential use, acting for investors, landowners, and developers, and dealing with matters such as conditional contracts, options, and overage agreements. The team has particular expertise in dealing with pensions via SIPPs and SSASs as well as acting for a number of registered charities. Its specialists deal with all aspects of agricultural property, including its development for residential and commercial use and disposals for renewable energy uses. Long-serving partners Sara Garnett and Andrew Beattie lead the team.

“We act for all sorts of businesses, and the people who own them and manage them”, says Head of Commercial Litigation and Employment, partner Alison Leith. “The businesses range from sole traders and SMEs to large professional partnerships and blue chip companies, and everything in between. Many of our clients have trusted us to help them with business-critical decision-making for year after year, some for over a half a century.”

The firm has a long-established Corporate law offering. Its clients include many directors of companies, as well as the companies themselves. “In the current economic climate,” Nigel Broadbent says, “directors and owners of businesses that survived lockdown are finding that they need specialist advice to help them deal with the fallout from that unprecedented period. Many businesses are restructuring, and seeing opportunities for disposals and acquisitions, and succession planning. We bring an experienced viewpoint to the table, and our clients really value that.”

Alongside the Commercial Law Team, TBI’s Private Family Law partner Wendy Beacom leads a group of dedicated family lawyers, also based at Wynyard. “There’s a lot of common ground between the work my team does and what the Commercial Law Team does”, says Wendy. “Many of the financial issues that present themselves when a marriage breaks down are, fundamentally, commercial ones, especially when valuable assets, such as a business, land or pensions are involved. Business owners and landowners often need to consider agreements where they are contemplating marriage/remarriage.  The strength of our team, combined with the Commercial Law Team who work closely alongside us at Wynyard, means we always have experienced commercial lawyers on hand to ensure that every client’s needs can be properly protected.”

The firm is constantly recruiting to broaden and strengthen its offering.   A recent recruit is Olivia Potter, a city-trained specialist property lawyer, also based at the Wynyard office. Olivia undertakes complex and high value residential property transactions and complements the links between the work of the Private Family Law team and the various disciplines of the Commercial Law Team.

“We are delighted that Olivia has come on board. We continue to grow our teams, and our offering to businesses and their owners and managers, landowners, and others. We are always on the lookout for talented lawyers to join us, wherever they are on their career trajectory, to help us” says Nigel Broadbent. “The firm has been around since 1842, and our brand and values are well known to, and trusted by, the business community, and indeed the wider community. We welcome enquiries from anyone who would like to join us as we carry those values forward into the future.”
