COPD, Bronchitis & Emphysema

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a persistent obstruction of the airways, occurring with either emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

If your working environment has caused COPD symptoms, it is likely you could claim for bronchitis or emphysema compensation, if you were exposed to harmful airborne substances in your place of work and are now suffering as a result.

What causes COPD?

What causes COPD?

COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung condition which involves the airflow to the lungs being obstructed.  It can be caused by smoking cigarettes or by long term exposure to gases or matter such as dust that can irritate the lungs.

Unfortunately for victims, the symptoms of COPD often do not occur until significant lung damage has already taken place.

Symptoms of COPD include:

  • Shortness of breath and wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Lots of mucus in your lungs
  • A chronic cough that may produce mucus
  • Blueness of the lips or fingernail beds (cyanosis)
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • General fatigue
  • Swelling in ankles, feet, or legs

The difference between emphysema and bronchitis

The difference between emphysema and bronchitis

Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the two most common conditions that contribute to COPD. Chronic bronchitis is inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs. Symptoms include a daily cough and mucus (sputum) production.

Emphysema is a condition in which the alveoli at the end of the smallest air passages (bronchioles) of the lungs are destroyed because of damaging exposure to cigarette smoke and other irritating gases and particulate matter that affect the respiratory system.
